Quote of the Week, Perhaps a Bit Longer

Oh No Baby Goat!

Well, it's still raining here in northern Nevada. I can not believe the amount of rain we have received lately. Saturday we got 54 hundredths and Sunday we got 64 hundredths, over an inch in two days... unheard of in Nevada.

On Saturday we had a bit of a scare. Bodie, our baby goat, bloated. Bloat is caused by the build up of gas in the rumen, which is the first part of the first chamber of the ruminant stomach. Bloating can be deadly to ruminants, so we were really nervous. We think that a combination of grain and moisture is what caused it. When we first noticed it, she was all puffed up and her left side was bigger than her right (a clear sign of bloat). Also, her breathing was labored and she was clearly uncomfortable. Her bloat turned out to be fairly mild, we simply took her food away from her, massaged her tummy and took her for a couple of walks. By evening she seemed to be feeling much better. We were really happy that we didn't have to release the gas by using a needle. Sunday she was back to her normal self, thank goodness.

So, here are some recent pictures of the cutest goat in the world (none from when she was bloated):

Bodie playing with her poppa, Dusty refusing to take part in her antics

Bodie sampling the menu at chicken creek
