Baby Snake

Yesterday, on my hike with the kids, I saw a baby Great Basin Gopher Snake (Pituophis catenifer), but unfortunately I did not have my camera with me, so no picture. It was so cute and tiny. When I went to move it from the middle of the road it coiled and tried to strike--so adorable. In the end, it was easy to catch and move--don't worry, I have worked in herpetology and have experience handling snakes. It was my first snake of the season and only my third or fourth reptile. The only other reptiles I have seen so far this spring have been western fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis) and I have only caught quick glimpses of them as they scurry under a nearby bush or rock.

Gopher Snakes are not poisonous, but they will try to strike you.
